How I Built My First iOS App in a Week with Claude Code

A power-user account by Denny Guhlmann, founder of StackDrive AI

“Bolt got stuck. ChatGPT wasn't enough. Claude Code shipped my first iOS app in a week.”

This isn't a fairy tale about AI shipping apps overnight. It's about hitting walls with Bolt and ChatGPT, finding Claude Code, and turning two months of frustration into seven days of actual progress.

The Problem

I wanted to track my acid-base balance — PRAL values, the real medical metric — and no decent app existed. So I decided to build one myself. No native development background. No app-shipping experience. Just a need and the conviction that AI tools should be enough.

The Tool Journey

I started with Bolt. The AI ran in circles, broke features, couldn't see its own mess. I switched to ChatGPT for coding help — output was fine, but copy-paste workflows don't ship apps with multiple files and a backend.

Then I found Claude Code on YouTube. First session in, I knew it was different. It worked with my entire codebase, maintained context across hours, made architectural decisions instead of guessing.

I took my Bolt code as reference. Claude Code didn't try to clean up the mess — it restructured everything properly. Same idea, completely new build. I renamed the app to Inbalance. Symbolic of the reset.

One Week Later

Seven days from stuck-in-Bolt to live on TestFlight. Real iOS app. External tester active. Apple review pending.

The hardest part wasn't the code — it was building a custom food database with PRAL values that aren't in any standard nutrition API. Claude Code handled the backend complexity. I provided the domain knowledge.

What Claude Code Doesn't Do

Honest disclaimer: Claude Code isn't a magic wand. For images and visuals, ChatGPT with DALL-E and Sora is better. For App Store listings and ASO, ChatGPT handles marketing copy more naturally. Claude Code is built for code — and that's where it excels.

The Bottom Line

Bolt got stuck. ChatGPT wasn't enough. Claude Code shipped my first iOS app in a week.

That's the headline. The full story — exact prompts, the tool decisions for each phase, the specific mistakes I made and how to avoid them — is in the upcoming Guide.
